I've got another post up on using games as literature, and this one is much more focused on games specifically, so hopefully people here might find it worthwhile!

As before, any thoughts, comments, or critiques are welcome!

  1. Hear about new Animal Crossing Happy Home Academy Game.
  2. Get super excited!
  3. Read about gameplay mechanic and reliance on amiibo system, feel disappointed. (Like maybe Nintendo just wants you to buy lots of amiibo cards...)
  4. Wander sadly around Gamestop on another day because your partner is buying a game.
  5. See a 2014 Harvest Moon game (Lost Valley) you totally missed the release of! And it costs less than the new Animal Crossing game.
  6. Purchase, go home, begin playing.
  7. At a certain point, decide it just makes more sense to stay up the extra hour til you feed the cats because why fall asleep only to be awoken by hungry cats?
  8. Win (except for the whole sleep cycle bit...)
Which is a concise way of saying that I am enjoying Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley.

If you haven't played it, it combines a lot of the elements of Harvest Moon -- farming, plant hybridization is kind of the new thing, building relationships with NPCs -- with some terraforming that is totally-not-like-Minecraft. I mean, there's no zombies! But you can totally do water features now, and certain plants grow better at different elevations. It's fun!
Other improvements: I have yet to need to eat something because I'm out of energy; you don't have to switch your tools around manually; harvest sprites really will help you do your chores (even though they won't do them two days in a row).

Some of the UI is a little clunky, but I think they do pretty well for a DS game?

Hi, folks; I'm a game designer/publisher and also a teacher of high school English and Game Design, and I'm working on using games (video games and tabletop RPGs) in my English classes, along with the usual books.

I'm interested in hearing thoughts and feedback on the idea of using video games as texts in class; my first blog post in a series on this subject is about considering what 'literature' means in this context, and I'm happy to have disagreement or discussion on that, but the later posts will be more specifically about the use of games. What makes them a good fit, what problems they have, and so on.

So, if you are interested in the idea, have negative or positive feedback, or even experience to share on the subject, I'd love to hear it! I'm especially interested in recommendations for games that might be used in a classroom, as my later posts will start to include critiques of such things.

Thanks!

I just thought this sale might be of interest - since it also gives you access to tools to make your own RPG games! The sale is meant to finish: Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

The Humble Weekly Bundle: RPG Maker (24 hour sale)
OMG! DIY RPG? A large bundle of RPG games and the very tools used to make them. If you have thought about making your own games this is a great place to start. Pay what you want for RPG Maker VX Ace plus the DLC Bundle #1 which includes music and graphic assets to include in your games. Along with the tools you also get some great games: Skyborn, Sweet Lily Dreams and the Free Games Bundle #1 with four more homebrew titles.

Pay $6 or more and also get RPG Maker XP and two additional content packs, the DLC Bundle #2 and a Humble Bundle Exclusive Resource Pack. Additional games added include critically acclaimed To The Moon, Deadly Sin 2 and Free Games Bundle #2 with an extra five homemade games!

Contribute $12 or more and get everything above plus the Game Character Hub, a tool for creating your own graphical assets. Included is another asset pack, DLC Bundle #3, and an additional game, Legionwood 2: Rise of the Eternal's Realm.

The shopkeeper must be going mad! If you bought all of these programs, content packs and games separately, it would cost you more than $370—but we're letting you name your price!

This game-making machine is Steam-powered. All of the tools and games in this bundle are available on Steam for Windows. In addition, the majority of the Asset packs are also available via Steam; however, a few of them are DRM-free and have to be downloaded and installed separately. They are only fully compatible with RPG Maker VX Ace. To The Moon is available DRM-free and on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Please check out the full system requirements here.

Support charity. You choose where your money goes: between the developers and two vital charities, the IndieCade Foundation and Child's Play. If you like this daily bundle, a tip to Humble Bundle would be greatly appreciated!

Launching on May 29 is the 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest, a month-long competition encouraging all aspiring game developers to make their dream game using any engine for a chance to win huge prizes, including cash ($10,000 Grand Prize), exposure and critical acclaim. Submissions are due by June 30 and will be judged by a panel of RPG Maker and Humble Bundle team members and special guests. Full contest details can be found at http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com.

Ao3's latest recruitment just opened here: http://www.transformativeworks.org/volunteer

Ao3 is archive of out own and it's a large multifandom fanworks archive (mostly fanfiction, but some post pod fic, fan art or fan vids) - the archive is located here: http://archiveofourown.org

One of the areas of specialty they are trying to find wranglers for is video games

Tag Wrangling Volunteer
The Tag Wranglers are responsible for keeping the hundreds of thousands of tags on AO3 in some kind of order! Based on internal guidelines, we choose which form a tag takes in the filters and auto-complete, and we link tags together to make the works and bookmarks on the archive easier to browse and search (so that users can find exactly what they’re looking for, whether that’s Steve/Tony with tentacles or g-rated Rose/Kanaya fluff).

If you like organizing, working in teams, or excuses to fact-check your favorite fandom canons, you might enjoy tag wrangling! To join us, click through to the job description and application form.

Please note: due to (amazing!) interest in wrangling, we’re currently looking for wranglers for specific fandoms only. See the application for which fandoms are in need. Applications will close on the 24th of March, 2014, unless we fill our vacancies earlier.

For more details please see: http://www.transformativeworks.org/tag-wrangling-volunteer
.

I've put under the cut the games that they're trying to find wranglers for.

Why are there so many guilds in MMOs (any of them I've played) with Latin names? Why isn't there any Elvish or Klingon guild names? Or some other language? Nope, Latin. And on every server there's guaranteed a "Veni Vidi Vici" hehe. :)

I've been enjoying messing with a reseller lately. He sells a donut ton of adorning materials and I've been selling the same things spread out among a bunch of characters and staggering the prices above and below his. A couple times he's bought everything and more and increased the price even further lol. All that happens is me and random other people sell more and he/she is just digging a deeper hole for themself lol.

You know there's actually at least one person on my server (the one I mentioned cause I asked before starting this, but I'm sure there's more) that just play the game to play the market? I really, really wish and think you should be able to add players to a "no sell" list. Like how you can put people on ignore. Put people on the list that stops them from being able to buy your stuff. They'd run out of characters to do it on.

What's up with the people that give their characters and pets names like "Fahku," "Shethead," and things like that?

I don't know why I'm complaining except seeing a animal pet named something like those bothers me a bit.

New raids today in EQ2 for all the raiders. As you know, I'm not going to raid even if I get a character to max level. :P

The servers were down for an hour earlier for the silliness. Now they are back down cause there's issues with the silliness.

Remind me to never browse raider/raiding threads in the EQ2 forums again. So much arrogance. Makes me feel gross.

OK

Does anyone here NOT eat snack foods at your comp while playing? XD

I would be surprised if you say you don't. :P Maybe I wouldn't even believe you! XD

I just had some chips at my comp with my EQ2 Defiler on standby. :P

What do you like to have during those quick breaks? Or do you take a break? Anyone eat mini donuts and fight raid bosses at the same time? XD

So.. it seems that Ninty is putting out yet another handheld... they have the DSi family, the 3DS family, the 2DS, the Wii family, which includes the doomed Wii U... here is an article. Aand, has anyone heard this: Pokemon Plus & Minus? Here is an article on that too.

I, myself am totally salivating at the prospect of new pokemon games. I hope it's not just a rumor. This is going to be epic.

The Sims4 isn't a rumor but I am just wondering who in our comm is getting it. My laptop might run it.. it ran the Sims3 but I think Colly is against it. IDK I might get it. :)

That's all.
